The Kalona City Council held a work session to discuss possible sidewalk improvement projects before their regular meeting on October 18th.

The council was presented with suggestions for five possible projects to improve sidewalk conditions in the city. Project one would focus on the north side from 6th Street to 10th Street in front of the Kalona Historical Village with the second project being a crossing on the west side of Highway 1 from West H Avenue to the future H Avenue street extension. The third project would total 1,650 feet of sidewalk from G Avenue to J Avenue. Construction for 950 feet of sidewalk from H Avenue to J Avenue and 5,100 feet of sidewalk on the south side from 1st Place to 6th Street and the north side from 6th to 14th Street with a connection to the Kreekside subdivision round out the fourth and fifth projects. Total costs range from $49,900 to $265,150. City Administrator Ryan Schlaubaugh suggested to the council to look into a cost-share system with homeowners in areas with private sidewalks and set priority projects as next steps.
