Area cross country runners completed their season this weekend at the state cross country meet in Fort Dodge.
The Mid-Prairie girls team of Danielle Hostetler Sydney Yoder, Jaden Yoder, Mitzi Evans, Abbi Fleming, Phoebe Shetler and Annika Poll capped off their season with their fifth consecutive class 2A team title. Representing the Golden Hawk boys team were Thaddeus Shetler, Emmett Swartzentruber, Chandler Hershberger, Preston Yutzy, Jayse Yoder, Nathan Wallington and Robert Nagy.
History was made for the Washington Demons in the class 3A competition when senior Lance Sobaski became the school’s first boys runner to return from the state meet with a medal finishing in eighth place. In his third trip to state, he finished with a time of 16:20. This is the highest finish ever at state for a Washington runner. Sophomore Micah Rees ran alongside Sobaski making this the first time that Washington has had multiple runners at state since 1998.
The class 1A competition featured Columbus runners Freddy Vergara, Isaac Acosta, Damian Vergara , Tim Hills-Carrier, Mason Hills-Carrier, Tyler Humiston and Javier Panchillo. Winfield-Mt. Union was represented by sophomore Gabe Hemsworth with senior Leah Bontrager representing Hillcrest Academy.
