And then there were two….
A pair of KCII area football teams remain alive in the playoffs for their respective classes and will try to win quarterfinal games to qualify for the state semifinals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
In class 1A, the unbeaten Sigourney-Keota Cobras are looking to make it to the Dome back-to-back seasons. SK is ranked No. 3 in 1A football in the final poll of the year from the Iowa Associated Press, with a perfect 10-0 record after an 18-7 win over Waterloo Columbus in last Friday’s second round of the postseason. The only thing standing between the Cobras and a return trip to the Dome is a road trip to fellow unbeaten and No. 5 ranked Dike-New Hartford. The Wolverines advanced to this round of the playoffs with a 35-14 win over Pella Christian. The Cobras will travel to Dike-New Hartford Friday.
In 8-man football, the undefeated WACO Warriors are looking for a UNI-Dome berth for the first time since 2010. The Warriors are into the quarterfinals after administering a 50-8 beat down of Martensdale-St. Marys at Blue Devil Stadium in the second round. The Warriors are unblemished at 10-0 and will host No. 6 Aububon with a bid to the state semifinals and the Dome on the line. The Wheelers eliminated No. 2 Montezuma in Friday’s second round 63-14. You can hear all of the action between the Warriors and the Wheelers live from Roth Field in Wayland on AM 1380, FM 106.1 and 102.5 KCII Thursday night, beginning with the Washington HyVee pregame show at 6:30 and kickoff at 7.
