Washington County is set to receive state and federal money for a secondary road flood mitigation project.

County Engineer Jacob Thorius informed the County Board of Supervisors Tuesday that they are receiving about $231,388 in federal funds and about $30,852 in state funds for flood mitigation on Dogwood Avenue. As per the agreement the county must provide about $46,278 for the work which was approved by the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The federal funds were released on September 17th, and the county seeks to make improvements that will raise the elevation for about half a mile of Dogwood Avenue so that future flood events can be mitigated. An engineering case study was done for this as well as a hydraulic study for a nearby Skunk River bridge, where they will also raise that roadway to an elevation two feet higher than the 100-year flood elevation. Work is scheduled to be completed by December 16th, 2022.
