The FFA chapter at WACO High School has made a return after a decades-long break.
For nearly 30 years the high school has not had its own individual chapter. After much discussion and the hiring of agriculture teacher, Ethan Fetzer, the school started up more agricultural classes and the FFA chapter at the beginning of this school year. The chapter was required by the Iowa and National FFA organizations to adopt a constitution, create a program of activities and elect an officer team. Since then, the chapter has had a busy season highlighted by a first place finish at the Kirkwood Livestock Judging competition, attending Ag Exploration Day at the Southeast ISU Research Farm, and sending representatives to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. Fetzer says those who attended had a great experience getting to see other chapters from across the nation, “I think the students were able to realize that agriculture can be across the whole country. I heard several of the kids say to me a couple of times, they said, ‘I didn’t know we could meet so many other people from other states.’ And so it was good to see the kids having fun, meeting new people and learning more about the industry.”
