Put on your leg warmers and load up the hair spray for Washington High School’s fall production, “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Confused yet? Well, that’s because Washington Drama Director Brett Pierson chose to put an anachronistic twist on the Oscar Wilde-penned comedy that was first performed in 1895, now time traveling to a 1980’s sitcom setting. This is senior Quinn Wubbena’s fifth high school production he’s been a part of, this time playing the secondary hero of Algernon Moncrieff. Wubbena shares his initial reaction to the play’s setting, “When I first read through the script when I got it and I saw that it was set in the 1880s, I got concerned ‘cause that’s lame. But once he said it was in the 1980s I was really excited and I was wondering what the costumes would be and I was brought back yesterday during play practice and got on all the outfits and stuff like that and it was super exciting. It was really just tying the whole thing together.”

It’s the fourth production for junior Molly Klinzman, who is playing Lady Bracknell, which Klinzman feels is very indicative of her personality, “I absolutely love the ‘80s, it’s one of my favorite time periods. I just think the literature and even just the pop culture from the time is just absolutely extravagant, I enjoy it. And I take a lot of my fashion inspiration from that already in everyday life. So the costumes I really feel at home in even with the way I’ll be doing my hair and makeup, I’ve done that before and so I think I’ll just be very comfortable with it.”

Performances of The Importance of Being Earnest take place at 7 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center at the high school. Tickets are available at the door at $5 for students and $10 for adults.
