A new journey for the defending Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division Girls Basketball Champions is upon us with Winfield-Mt. Union opening their season tonight hosting New London.

The Wolves are coming off of a campaign that soon won’t be forgotten where they went undefeated in the regular season and finished 18-1 overall with a regional semifinal berth. No player averaged double figures, but they showed off their depth with seven averaging at least five points a night. Four of those players return headlined by junior Bradie Buffington, looking to build off of 8.6 points and 4.8 boards an outing. Jobey Malone is back after tallying 6.4 points, Keetyn Townsley 1.9 steals, and Melina Oepping with 4.1 rebounds.

Wolves Head Coach Mitch Wachs previews the key to the season. “We bring back a lot of experience in our top seven, especially starting five, but outside of that we have a lot of new players. We are really solid at the top and our goal is to bring the others along throughout the season to develop some depth.”

New London was 3-16 last winter and lost their top scorer to graduation. Seven of their top eight return including Ashlyn McSorley and her 9.7 points and 4.1 assists a contest. WMU won the only meeting last year 60-29.

The season gets started at 6 p.m. tonight in Winfield.
