As a part of the 19th annual KCII Caring Christmas Food Drive, the Lord’s Pantry in Sigourney partners with KCII to help individuals and families in need during this holiday season.
The Lord’s Pantry serves individuals and families of Keokuk County. Volunteer Tammy Gilliland has been a part of the pantry since 2013 and she shares what has been the best part about volunteering, “What I enjoy the most is just helping individuals and families. And not just with their food insecurities but also recognizing that there’s more than just food. That there’s other items that families need such as diapers or paper towels. Things that I didn’t think about before becoming involved and being directly involved.”
Gilliland added that when the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020, the number of people reaching out for assistance skyrocketed. Since that time numbers have fluctuated. She says that the pantry provides canned goods, non-perishable items, different kinds of meat and frozen foods but their biggest need is for household items such as paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap, shampoo and deodorant. The Lord’s Pantry is run solely on volunteers and donations. The pantry distributes food boxes at 3 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. on Fridays.
