The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams are in action tonight when they welcome the Tipton Tigers to Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. The Golden Hawk boys stand at 1-0 on the year after opening things at West Liberty Tuesday with a resounding 66-20 win over the Comets. Carter Harmsen led Mid-Prairie on offense with 17 points including three dunks. Shawn Dodds and Camron Pickard came off the bench for 12 points each. The Golden Hawk defense was also a large part of the story, holding West Liberty scoreless for more than 15 minutes of game action and outrebounding the Comets by 32. Jack Pennington and Will Cavanagh each pulled in six boards, Pennington had four assists and a pair of steals. Tipton is 0-1 on the season after falling short at home against Iowa City Regina Tuesday 49-48. Bob Ryan had 20 points and Davis Webb 13 in the loss. Mid-Prairie has won three of the last five in the series with the Tigers.
The Golden Hawk girls are 1-1 on the year after a win over Durant last week and a 61-38 loss to No. 9 West Liberty on the road Tuesday. This year, Mid-Prairie is scoring 48 points per game, giving up 49, shooting 39% from the floor, 27% from downtown and 50% at the line. They average 26 rebounds, 13 assists, 13 steals and 16 turnovers per game. They are led individually by Amara Jones at 14 points per game with Maddie Nonnenmann at 10. Nonnenmann leads the Hawks on the glass with six boards while Jones leads the guard court with four assists and four steals per night. Tipton is also 1-1 on the year after beating Anamosa 47-28 then losing to Regina on Tuesday 58-28. The Tigers score 38 per game and give up 43. They shoot 35% from the floor 28% from behind the arc and 40% at the line. They average 23 rebounds, five assists, nine steals and 18 turnovers per night. Individually, Brenna Wilkins, Carly Langenberg and Kyra Shaull are all scoring nine points per game. Shaull leads Tipton on the glass with eight boards per game. Wilkins averages two assists and two steals per night. Mid-Prairie has won 18 of the last 20 in the series.
