It was the South Iowa Cedar League opener for the Sigourney basketball teams on Tuesday in Marengo and Iowa Valley protected their home court with a sweep of the Savages.
The Tiger girls (3-0) carried the advantage of a 17-2 first quarter all the way through and picked up a 50-35 conference win. The Savages struggled offensively shooting just 20% from the floor, but Carly Goodwin paced the team with 13 points. Josephine Moore added eight points and Julia VanEe brought in 11 boards. Sigourney drops to 0-2 on the season.
The Savage boys hung tough for awhile trailing just 17-12 at the break, but a 40-21 second half in favor of the Tigers (1-0) led to a 57-33 victory. Four Iowa Valley players were in double figures led by Peyton Loffer with 16. Sigourney starts the winter 0-1.
Both squads now gear up for a rivalry doubleheader tonight hosting Keota.
