The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestling team has their first action on the road today when they travel to the Jeremy Fulk Classic at New London High School. The Hawks have been busy so far this week, hosting six duals between Tuesday and Thursday events at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. On Tuesday, the Hawks dropped two out of three contests, falling to Wapello and Eddyville-Blakesburg before beating English Valleys. On Thursday, Mid-Prairie flipped the script and took two of three with wins over West Branch and New London to go along with a tight loss to Tipton.
Mid-Prairie has two ranked wrestlers in their lineup according to the latest 2A poll from IAwrestle.com with Cael Garvey No. 1 at 195lbs and Gannon Callahan No. 11 at 285lbs. Garvey has started the year 5-0. Other Golden Hawks above .500 through the first two dates on the calendar include Mose Yoder at 113lbs 5-1, Landry Gingerich at 132lbs, Kaden Meader at 170lbs, Jarron Thomas at 182lbs and Brodey Neal at 285lbs all 4-2. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Justin Garvey talked about the tournament. “We have been going to this tournament for years. It’s got a good level of competition and it’s a great starter tournament. I’m looking forward to the competition and a chance to get our guys some matches in a tournament atmosphere. Getting our young guys some valuable experience and see what they can do.”
The WACO Warriors are also in New London today. They opened the season Tuesday, winning three of four duals, taking our Baxter, Cardinal and Montezuma before falling to Sigourney-Keota. The Warriors do not have any ranked wrestlers in their lineup. They are led at this point in the year by Louden Huisenga at 160lbs, Kris Boone at 170lbs and Jonah Clark at 220lbs all with 4-0 records. Gage Samo at 106lbs, John McLaughlin at 120lbs and Larz Smith at 138lbs are all 3-1.
There are nine total ranked wrestlers in the field with No. 7 in 1A New London the only ranked team. At the tournament will be New London, BGM, Cedar Rapids Washington, Illini West, Louisa-Muscatine, the Warriors and the Hawks. Action continues all day at Charles Lorber Gymnasium in New London.
