An all KCII area showdown in Riverside on Friday was all Winfield-Mt. Union when the Wolves swept Highland in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader.

The girls game saw WMU take a 26-15 lead into half when the Wolves exploded for a 22-5 third quarter that led to a 56-29 triumph. Bradie Buffington led three scorers in double figures with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Keetyn Townsley cashed in with 13 points while Melina Oepping had 11 points and 16 rebounds. The Huskies were led by Dani Laughlin’s 11 points. WMU Head Coach Mitch Wachs challenged his players at half to hit the glass harder. “I thought Highland was completely outworking us on the glass in the first half credit to them. I challenged our players at the break and we responded well. We came out and completely dominated the defensive boards. In the first half we were playing solid defense, but couldn’t secure the rebound. In the second half we were able to put it altogether and really played well in the third quarter.” The Wolves out rebounded the Huskies 46-32 and won the turnover battle 27-8. WMU improved to 4-0 and Highland dropped to 1-2.

The boys game followed the beat of a similar drum with a 30-11 Wolves lead at the break continuing to grow with a 17-8 third and a 58-22 final score. Cam Buffington led all scorers with 26 points on nine of 13 shots and the sophomore collected 13 points. Abram Edwards managed 12 points and 13 boards while Jake Edwards forced five steals and dished out four assists. WMU improved to 2-0 and Highland started the season 0-1.
