The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestling team gets back to the River Valley Conference slate tonight when they travel to Monticello to meet the Panthers in their home gym and Iowa City Regina. Mid-Prairie has a 3-3 dual record on the season after taking wins against New London and West Branch but falling to Tipton in their home quad last week. The Hawks were in tournament action Saturday at New London where they finished second in the team standings and crowned one champion with Mose Yoder at 113lbs. The Hawks have two ranked wrestlers in their lineup according to the 2A poll from IAwrestle.com with Cael Garvey No. 1 at 195lbs and Gannon Callahan No. 11 at 285lbs.

Iowa City Regina enters with a dual record of 5-2 after going 4-1 over the weekend at the Jesup duals with wins against AGWSR, North Tama, Postville and Waterloo West. The Regals have two ranked wrestlers in their lineup in the 2A poll with Aidan Udell No. 4 at 170lbs and Ronan Poynton No. 8 at 195lbs. The Regals got the better of the Hawks last year in Wellman 39-36.

Monticello is 2-3 in duals this season. They wrestled Durant and Anamosa in a River Valley Conference triangular last Thursday, beating the Wildcats and falling to the Blue Raiders. The Panthers have no ranked wrestlers in their lineup. The Panthers beat the Golden Hawks a year ago 46-36. This week on the KCII PM Sports Page, Golden Hawk head coach Justin Garvey broke down the event. “Monticello has a good team coming through right now. They have a huge youth program and those kids are starting to get to the high school level. Every match, every point is important. We had a talk with our guys that even though they are green and inexperienced and might be losing a match they need to fight and do anything they can to stay off their back and not give up bonus points. At the same time, we need to go out and win matches and get bonus points where we can. Iowa City Regina is tough in their middle to upper weights. They are a team we have gone back and forth with over the last couple of seasons and they got us last year. That’s one we’d like to get back.”

Action starts tonight at 6p.m. at Monticello High School.
