After picking up their first win of the season on Tuesday against English Valleys, the Sigourney boys’ basketball team made it a perfect week on Friday with a 52-51 thrilling victory at home over South Iowa Cedar League foe Belle Plaine.
The Savages weathered an early Plainsmen (4-1) run trailing 12-7 after one, but they came back to tie it at 24-24 heading into the break. Fast forward to 15 seconds left and Sigourney trailing by one, freshman Isaac Bruns delivered the final blow with a put back bucket that sealed the conference win. Bruns hit five of seven shots to collect 13 points off the bench. The Savages were led by a 14 point outing from Levi Crawford. Ethan Shifflett managed 13 points and Bo Schmidt brought in nine boards. Head Coach Mitch Eslick tells KCII Sports his team showed mental toughness in this one. “Belle Plaine led most of the way, but I am really proud of how our guys competed. There were a couple times where it looked like things were getting away from us, but our boys made a run and got right back into it. We never got over the hump until it mattered in the final couple seconds with Isaac coming up big.” The black and gold move to 2-2 on the winter.
The girls had a harder time in the first game by dropping the conference bout 49-36 against the Plainsmen (3-2). The Savages are now 1-4.
