For the first time in nearly two calendars years, the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team dropped a regular season game on Friday with a 40-38 loss at Central Lee.

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference crossover game was neck and neck the entire night with the score tied at 31-31 after three. A 9-7 Hawks (4-1) fourth quarter was enough to pull out the one possession victory. The Wolves’ Jobey Malone led all scorers with 16 points while Melina Oepping and Bradie Buffington each added eight. The Hawks were nine of 21 from long range with Alivia Myhre knocking down three of them and finishing with 14 points. Pre-pandemic is how far you have to go back to find the Wolves in the loss column in the regular season with their last defeat coming February 6th, 2020.

WMU drops to 6-1 and they battle Mediapolis (6-0) for the north division lead tomorrow.
