In comeback fashion, the Sigourney girls’ basketball team got in the win column by taking down Washington 40-38 in an area battle last night.

As heard on KCII, the road Demons controlled much of the first half by building a lead as high as nine with a minute to go until break. A 5-1 Savage run steamrolled by a Carly Goodwin three and Josephine Moore bucket cut the deficit to just 30-25 at half. That momentum carried into the final two quarters with a dogfight ensuing and Sigourney eventually taking the lead halfway through the fourth. Trailing by two with 10 seconds left, Washington tried to get the ball inside, but turned it over and Sigourney hung on for the non-conference victory. Moore had a monster night on the boards and led all scorers as a freshman with 14 points. Zoe Webb added nine and Goodwin had seven. The Demons were led by 10 point efforts from Makenna Conrad and Elyse Hunt.

Sigourney Head Coach Zach Tremmel pointed to the end of the first half being the difference. “We got down nine and the way our season has gone we haven’t been able to dig out of a hole like that. That was not the case today. We had that run at the end of the second and we used that the rest of the way. We had some bench players that gave us sparks including Josephine being the x-factor. The post was the one spot I was worried about coming in against Washington and she came in to give us that presence. She held her own as a freshman and was huge for us.”

Sigourney improves to 2-4 and they face off with Tri-County today. Washington is 1-5 and travel to Mount Pleasant on Friday.
