A couple win streaks for the Sigourney basketball teams were snapped on Friday when they were swept in a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader at Montezuma.

The defending state boys champs in Montezuma (6-1) gave the Savages their first set back in five games with a 67-27 victory. They took a 31-17 lead into half, but exploded for a 22-8 third to put the night to bed. The Braves out rebounded Sigourney 43-24 and shot 50% from the floor. The black and gold connected on just 22% of their shots with Bo Schmidt leading the way finishing with 12 points and six rebounds.

The Savage girls struggled to get much offense going with just one quarter where they scored more than one field goal. They trailed 15-3 after one, 26-15 at half, and the Braves (7-1) pulled away in the final 16 minutes for a 56-17 win. Montezuma’s Shane Wetering led all scorers with 19 points.

The Sigourney boys are now 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the SICL. The girls drop to 3-5 and 2-4 in the league. Both squads close out the first half of the season tomorrow hosting HLV.
