Sixty-seven Washington County residents have now died due to COVID-19, as over 100 positive tests were confirmed for the county Wednesday.
The Iowa Department of Public Health confirmed 119 new deaths in the last week for a total of 7,799 Iowans that have died from COVID-19. Washington County’s 14-day average positive test rate stagnated from last week at 7.9%, while statewide the average decreased from 11.3 to 10.8%. Hospitalizations decreased from their 2021 peak last week, with 747 patients currently hospitalized in Iowa and 158 in the Intensive Care Unit. The southeast region’s numbers decreased from 192 hospitalizations last week to now 177, and from 63 in the ICU to currently 52. Those not fully vaccinated account for 81.5% of those hospitalized, and 88% of COVID patients in the ICU.
Vaccination rates increased slightly locally and statewide this week. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show 54.2% of Washington County residents and 58.1% of all Iowans are fully vaccinated. Washington County Public Health has COVID-19 vaccine clinics for those five years and older every Wednesday this January on the fifth floor of the Federation Bank building in Washington.
