Longtime Winfield-Mt. Union head girls basketball coach Mitch Wachs recently added to his impressive resume by eclipsing 400 career wins in the first half of this season.
The 30-year head coach picked up win number 400 after a December 17th triumph over Wapello by a 70-24 score. The coveted 400 win total is just the latest of a long list of milestones for the 2018 Iowa Girls Coaches Association Basketball Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame inductee. Throughout three decades of being the head man, Wachs has a 402-285 overall record with a 58.5% win efficiency and he led the Wolves to four state bids including state championships in 1995 and 1996.
A humble Wachs was quick to give credit to others about reaching the milestone. “Most importantly we were able to beat Wapello that night. I have been around a long time and I have had great community support. Even in years when we didn’t win as much as others, we have always had great kids to work with. The 400 is just a number, but it means a lot to me that all 400 came at Winfield-Mt. Union where we have had such a great relationship with everyone in the community.”
Wachs and the 2021-22 Wolves currently sit at 9-2 overall and will return to action after break on January 4th against Columbus Community.
