A pair of KCII area boys basketball programs are taking class 1A by storm through the first half of the season.
The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves pull into the Christmas break with a 7-1 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in the Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division, putting them atop the standings alone. WMU is doing it with a mix of offense and defense. They are third in class 1A averaging nearly five and a half blocks per game. The Wolves are shooting 48% from the floor, eighth best in 1A in Iowa. Individually, Cam Buffington leads Winfield-Mt. Union and is third in 1A with a 63% success rate from three point range.
Their rivals, the WACO Warriors are also out to a hot start this season, standing at 6-2 at the break and 3-2 in the Supconference South Division. WACO is also getting the job done on both sides of the ball. They are No. 4 in class 1A at 39 rebounds per contest, 23 of those coming on the defensive end, also fourth best. WACO’s 16 steals per game places them eighth in class 1A. Their four team blocked shots per night are 10th most in the state.
These two teams faced off on December 18th with the Warriors getting the 49-41 rivalry win. They are each receiving votes in the latest class 1A poll from the Iowa Associated Press. The Wolves open the second half of the season Tuesday when they host Columbus, WACO is back in action at Central Lee Tuesday.
