For the first time in 2022, the Mid-Prairie boys and girls basketball teams will be in action when they host the Wilton Beavers Tuesday in a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Mid-Prairie girls come into the game with an overall and conference record of 4-3. They were winners at Northeast Goose Lake before Christmas 56-51 with Maddie Nonnenmann scoring 23 points and Amara Jones 13. On the season, Mid-Prairie shoots 30% from three point land No. 6 in 3A, averages 12 assists and 12 steals each 10th most in 3A and commit 21 turnovers, ninth most. Nonnenmann leads Mid-Prairie at 15 points and six boards per game. Jones averages four assists and three steals per night.
Wilton is 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the RVC. They beat Anamosa before Christmas 83-37 with Kelsey Drake and Ella Caffery each scoring 24. On the season Wilton’s 67 points per game are seventh most in 2A, their 45% mark from the floor is sixth in 2A, their 62% team free throw percentage is 10th with the most makes and second most attempts at the line 2A, their 37 rebounds are third, 15 assists eighth, and their 12 turnovers are fourth fewest. They are led by Drake at 22 points per game, third in 2A, Peyton Souhrada’s five assists per game, sixth in 2A and Caffrey’s eight boards per night. Wilton has won six of the last seven in the series including sweeping two games last year.
The Mid-Prairie boys enter action unbeaten at 7-0 after winning in Kansas City December 23rd over Raytown South 50-43. Carter Harmsen led the Hawks with 15 points. This is the first time the Golden Hawk boys have gotten to Christmas undefeated since the 2003-04 season. Mid-Prairie is scoring 60 points a night and giving up 39, while shooting 46% from the floor, pulling down 31 rebounds, dishing out 12 assists, grabbing 10 steals and only turning the ball over 10 times per night, ninth fewest in 2A. Harmsen, the all-stater, leads Mid-Prairie at 19 points and eight rebounds per night. Jack Pennington puts up four assists and three steals per night.
Wilton is 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in the RVC. Their last game was their only loss, falling to No. 6 Monticello 50-44. Wilton scores 63 per game and gives up 47. Their 50% from the floor is third in 2A their 67% at the line is eighth. Their 33 rebounds is third in the class, they average 14 assists per contest and their six blocked shots per game leads the state. Caden Kirkman is the man to watch for Wilton. He averages 20 points and 11 rebounds per game. That rebounding number is eighth in Iowa. His 64% clip from the floor is ninth in the state and his four blocked shots per game lead Iowa. Mid-Prairie has won 11 straight against Wilton and holds an 87-31 all-time record against the Beavers, including sweeping last year’s pair of games. Both teams are receiving votes in the Associated Press Class 2A poll. The winner of the boys contest will be alone in first place in the River Valley South.
