Winfield-Mt. Union continued their winning ways Tuesday in a Southeast Iowa Superconference all-KCII area basketball matchup against the Columbus Wildcats. The WMU boys rolled to their eighth win of the year and stayed unbeaten in the north with a 64-11 victory. The Wolves started quickly, up 17-6 after one quarter and then reached another gear in the second, going on a 28-1 run that spanned the entire frame to enact a running clock by halftime, leading 45-7. The Wolves won the second half 19-4 including shutting out the Wildcats in the fourth. WMU pulled down 35 rebounds, dished out 18 assists and grabbed 12 steals. Nine Winfield-Mt. Union players found the scoresheet with three in double figures led by Abram Edwards 20 points and seven rebounds, Carter Loyd had 11 and Cam Buffington 10. The Wolves are 8-1 overall, 7-0 in the Superconference and set up a battle for first place in the north Friday against Hillcrest Academy.
The Lady Wolves scored their 10th win of the year Tuesday 60-31 over the Wildcats. The Winfield-Mt. Union offense was firing on all cylinders from the onset. The Wolves started the game on a 21-6 run that lasted the entire first quarter and followed that up with an 18-4 blitz in the second that took them into half with a 39-10 lead. The Wolves kept control of the contest outscoring Columbus 16-7 in the third. Four Lady Wolves got to double figures led by Bradie Buffington’s 17 points. Jobie Malone had 15, Keely Malone 13 and Keetyn Townsley 10. The Wildcats were paced by Lily Coil’s 14 points and Sera Vela had 12. WMU is now 10-2 on the year, Columbus falls to 2-9.
