Upsets were not in the cards for the Keota basketball teams on Tuesday when they opened the second half with a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader against Montezuma and fell in both contests.
The Braves (7-2) got the Eagle boys behind the eight-ball early by storming out to an 18-8 lead after one and 37-24 advantage at half. Both teams stayed even the rest of the way with Montezuma walking away with a 66-53 victory. Keota out rebounded the Braves 39-27, but the road squad shot 55% from the floor compared to the Eagles 28%. Sawyer Stout led the purple and gold with 17 points while Evan Vittetoe had a monster double-double of 14 points and 16 boards. Keota is now 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the SICL.
The Eagle girls struggled to get much going offensively in a 46-22 loss to the No. 14 Braves (8-2). It was low scoring for awhile with Montezuma leading 6-1 after one, 14-8 at half, and it was an eight point contest heading into the fourth when the road squad pulled away with a 23-7 final quarter. Montezuma’s Shanae Wetering led all scorers with 14 points. Keota drops to 3-9 overall and 3-5 in the league.
The Eagle boys and girls return to the court Friday at HLV.
