The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks play host to the West Branch Bears tonight in a River Valley Conference basketball doubleheader. The Golden Hawk girls are 5-3 after a 43-38 win over Wilton at home Tuesday. Mid-Prairie shoots 30% from three point land No. 6 in 3A, averages 12 assists and 12 steals each 10th most in 3A and commits 21 turnovers, ninth most. Maddie Nonnenmann leads Mid-Prairie at 15 points and six boards per game. Amara Jones averages four assists and three steals per night.
The West Branch girls are 7-2 overall 6-2 in the RVC after a 52-38 loss to West Liberty Tuesday. The Bears are ranked No. 9 in class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. They score 47 points per game and give up 35, shooting 38% from the floor. They average 32 rebounds, 13 assists, 11 steals and six blocks per game. Individually, August Palmer scores 14 per game. Delaynie Luncekas pulls in 10 rebounds, has four assists and four blocked shots. The Bears have won the last eight in the series.
The Mid-Prairie boys are 8-0 on the year and in first place the RVC. They beat Wilton for a share of first place Tuesday 62-51. This is their best start since 1991. Mid-Prairie is scoring 60 points a night and giving up 39 while shooting 46% from the floor, pulling down 31 rebounds, dishing out 12 assists, grabbing 10 steals and only turning the ball over 10 times per night, ninth fewest in 2A. Carter Harmsen, the all-stater, leads Mid-Prairie at 19 points and eight rebounds per night. Jack Pennington puts up four assists and three steals per night.
The West Branch boys are 5-4 overall and in conference. They beat West Liberty Tuesday 72-51. They score 54 a game giving up 55 and shoot 42%. Average 25 rebounds, 11 assists and 11 turnovers. Holden Arnaman scores 16 per game to lead the way along with his five assists. West Branch has won 13 of the last 14 in the series. Action starts tonight at 6p.m. in Wellman.
