Downtown Washington will smell of breakfast food next Wednesday as a decades-long January tradition returns.
The Washington Fire Department is hosting its annual Pancake Day fundraiser from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 12th at the fire station. Drive through will not be offered, though carry-out will be. This will only be the second year residents will get to eat the pancakes, sausages, and eggs inside the new fire station, and organizer Joe Redlinger says all 36 firefighters and family members pitch in to make the event a success, “We actually call it ‘Pancake Week.’ Monday night we set up all the grills and put the cardboard on the floors so it’s easier to clean up, do all the set up, set up the tables and chairs and stuff like that. And then on Tuesday we patty all the sausage that we’re going to cook that day and then Wednesday’s the big day. So there’s several hours that everybody puts in to make this thing click.”
Pancake Day typically serves around 2,000 people, and proceeds go to support the department’s annual equipment and other expenses. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for kids at the door, or you can get a dollar off by buying them in advance at the fire station, Federation Bank, Washington State Bank or from any fire department member. Kids five and under eat free.
