Further details have been released on a fatal house fire in rural Riverside Saturday morning.

KCII previously reported about a fire that occurred at about 12:55 a.m. at 1047 Vine Avenue with two occupants inside. The Riverside Fire Department states that their first engine on scene found a single story house with fire through the roof. Crews performed a vent enter search of the first floor bedroom while another crew attacked the fire. The crews located the victim quickly and removed him from the house. It was determined the fire originated in the basement causing a partial collapse of the first floor. The additional arriving Riverside trucks and mutual aid companies brought the fire under control quickly and set up rural water operations. A second victim was later located in the basement under the collapse.

The two subjects pulled from the fire did not survive the incident and were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is handling the investigation. Ainsworth, Kalona, Wellman, Hills, and Lone Tree fire departments; Wellman Rescue, Riverside First Responders, Washington County Ambulance Service, and Washington and Johnson county sheriff’s offices responded to the scene. They were assisted by Washington County Secondary Roads, Eastern Iowa Light & Power, Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral Home, and the Washington County Medical Examiner. KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official.
