Saturday Highland High School hosted some of southeast Iowa’s best on the mat for the Gary Curtis Invitational. Area schools Washington, Mid-Prairie, WACO, Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union and the home huskies were all in action.
The Golden Hawks had the highest team finish, taking fifth with 118 points. Alburnett won the team title with 172.5 points. The Hawks had two champions with Cael Garvey taking the 195lb bracket with a fall over Trent Wilkerson of New London and Gannon Callahan winning gold at 285 with a 13-6 finals decision against Alexander Kaufmann of Wilton.
Washington was eighth with 102.5 points. Aaron Boone and Chase Greiner made their way to the top of the podium for the Demons. Boone won the 113lb crown by beating Brody Brisker of Wilton 5-4 in the finals. He was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Greiner took the title with a fall over Reece Klostermann of Albernett.
WACO was right behind the Demons in ninth with 98 points. Jonah Clark rolled through the 220lb bracket collecting the championship with a fall over Logan Wright of West Branch.
Columbus/Winfield Mt. Union was 12th with 78 points. Lane Scorpil added to the trophy case with a title at 120lbs, beating Preston Klostermann of Alburnett by 15-6 major decision in the finals.
Highland was 13th with 43.5 points. Carlos Valenzuela had the top finish for Highland, third at 132lbs.
Highland, WACO and Washington all sent girls wrestlers to compete at the Highland Tournament Friday. The Huskies crowned two champions on the day with Mackenzie McFarland winning her title match over Nat Flack of Iowa City, City High by fall and Maddie Peiffer beating Nicole Peterson of Iowa City, City High by fall in the finals to take the championship. Top finishes for the Warriors included a runner-up performance for each of Heaven Steege and Bralyyn Wagler. Teegan Sulentich led the Demons with a second place finish.
