It was another Southeast Iowa Super Conference night where the Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams got out the brooms with a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday against Pekin.
The WMU girls took down the Panthers (3-8) for the second time this season with a 50-30 victory. They led 13-6 after one, 25-11 at the break, and never let up in the second half. The team only committed 11 turnovers and shot 42% from the floor. Bradie Buffington collected a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Keetyn Townsley and Jobey Malone added 12 points a piece. The Wolves improve to 12-2 overall and stay in second place in the north with a 9-1 league mark.
The boys’ game was tight for eight minutes with the Wolves holding a slight 13-12 lead after one, but a 46-23 WMU close to the game led to a 59-35 runaway victory over the host Panthers (3-8). Cam Buffington hit 10 of 17 shots to finish with a game-high 22 points and 13 rebounds. Abram Edwards recorded 15 points and 10 boards while Jake Edwards was also in double figures with 11 points. They stay atop of the north division standings with a perfect 9-0 league mark and 11-1 overall.
Both WMU squads return to the court tomorrow hosting Highland.
