It was an area non-conference bout in Columbus Junction on Thursday with the Wildcat basketball teams welcoming Sigourney for a doubleheader and the Savages swept both games.
The Savage girls stretched a 19-14 halftime lead into 32-21 after three and the advantage continued to grow in a 44-27 win. Carly Goodwin led all scorers with 16 points and Rain Barthelman was also in double figures with 12. The Wildcats were paced by an 11 point outing from Sera Vela and Lily Coil brought in eight rebounds. Columbus dropped to 2-12 overall. The win for Sigourney followed a 44-10 beatdown of BGM on Tuesday. They held the Bears to 15% shooting and forced 30 turnovers. Josephine Moore led the team in that game with 14 points, seven rebounds, and six steals while Goodwin added 12 points. Sigourney is now 8-7 on the season.
The nightcap on Thursday saw Sigourney utilize a big second quarter outscoring the Wildcats 27-13 and it led to a 64-32 final score. Four Savages finished in double figures with Bo Schmidt leading the way with 16 points, Ethan Shifflett had 14, Levi Crawford 12, and Karson Weber also had 12. Columbus had 10 points come from Tim Hills and Grant Watson had nine. They fall to 3-10 on the season. Sigourney lost to BGM in the game prior by a 41-40 final score despite a furious 18-8 fourth quarter comeback that fell short. Crawford tallied 18 points. Sigourney Head Coach Mitch Eslick was pleased with how his team responded on Thursday after the rough loss to BGM. “Tuesday was just not our night, but to bounce back like we did against Columbus in the middle of a busy stretch was great to see. We got off to a better start and shared the ball well. When we have been good this season it has been when we have balanced scoring and that is exactly what we had in this one.” The black and gold are now 8-6 on the campaign.
