The Mid-Prairie School School board approved ordering an election for March 1st on the issuance of $26.3 million in general obligation bonds during their regular meeting on January 10th.
If passed by a 60% majority, the referendum would fund the construction of an auditorium at the high school, a new middle school gymnasium, parking lot improvements at East and West Elementary and the high school among other projects. During discussion, Board Secretary Jeff Swartzentruber informed the board that the petition drive produced nearly 500 signatures. The district was required to collect a minimum of 272, or 25% of votes cast during the district’s last regular election. The board also approved raising the maximum debt service levy from $2.70 to $4.05 per $1,000, though they anticipate the levy only increasing to $3.30. Moving forward, the board wants to focus on educating the voters on the details of the project and answer any questions they may have.
