The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls basketball team sprung the upset trap on No. 14 in class 3A Monticello Thursday night at Tim Grady Gymnasium, beating the Panthers by a 29-24 score. Points were at a premium in the game with the Hawks holding Monticello in single digits through the first half. Though they only made 11 field goals in the game, the Golden Hawks were efficient, six of them coming from downtown. Maddie Nonnenmann led Mid-Prairie’s scoring with 14 points. The Hawks pulled in 26 rebounds and had 11 steals. Mid-Prairie head coach Danny Hershberger talked about the keys to the win. “Monticello is a tough team, we had to be ready to match their toughness. The biggest thing for us was to defensively force them into tough outside shots and rebound. Points were at a premium but Maddie Nonnenmann stepped up with 14, 12 of those in the first half while we were building our lead. Amara Jones comes away with nine for us. Cana Rediger and Nora Pennington each only had three points but they were huge three point shots. I’m really proud of our overall effort.”
The Golden Hawks are now 9-5 as they get ready for Camanche in Wellman Friday.
