The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams took care of business in a River Valley Conference makeup doubleheader against rival West Liberty Monday in Wellman. The Golden Hawk girls scored a 40-38 upset of the No. 8 ranked Comets, stopping a seven game losing streak in the series. It was a defensive battle early with Mid-Prairie up 6-5 after the first and holding a slim 17-16 lead at the break. The margin was still thin after three with the Hawks up 27-24. Mid-Prairie did enough down the stretch to score the two point win, their first over the Comets since 2018. Maddie Nonnenmann was masterful with a game high 23 points. Mid-Prairie is now 11-5 and winners of their last five.
The Golden Hawk boys brought it on the defensive end to complete a season sweep of West Liberty 59-27. Mid-Prairie led 11-6 after one and put together a 12-3 run that lasted the entire second frame to grow the lead to 23-9 at half. The Hawks outscored the Comets 36-18 in the second half to pull away for the win. Carter Harmsen led Mid-Prairie with a 27 point, 14 rebound double double that included his 1,000 career point for the Golden Hawks. The Hawks grabbed 42 rebounds, came up with 15 steals and dished out 12 assists in the win. The victory moves the No. 6 ranked Hawks to 15-0. Mid-Prairie is back to the court tonight in a quick turnaround as the boys and girls travel to Iowa City to meet Regina.
