Five fire departments responded to a hog confinement fire in rural Wayland Sunday.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office received reports at approximately 8:16 p.m. of a structure fire at Eichelberger Farms located at 1099 Merrimac Avenue. Wayland Fire Chief Mat Leichty says that one building was already down and engulfed in flames by the time the first crews arrived. The fire then spread to an adjacent building that was destroyed. Leichty says around 1,000 swine were lost in the fire and the cause is unknown at this time. Crews were on the scene for six hours extinguishing the flames. The Winfield, Mount Pleasant, Olds, Brighton, Salem and Hillsboro fire departments, Henry County Health Center, and Henry County Emergency Management Agency assisted at the scene.
