Four KCII area boys basketball teams are getting recognition this week from the Associated Press for their work on the court so far this season.

The highest ranked team from the listening area in this week’s poll are the Washington Demons, checking in at No. 2 in class 3A, up two spots from a week ago. Washington entered the week with a 13-1 overall record and were 6-1, in second place in the Southeast Conference. The Demons dropped their only contest so far, falling to class 4A Ottumwa in overtime on Monday, snapping their seven game winning streak. Washington will next be in action Friday when they host Burlington. Conference rival Fort Madison sits atop the 3A poll, with all nine first place votes. The Bloodhounds are 13-0. Washington lost to Fort Madison earlier this season December 21st, 56-46. The Demons get another crack at the Bloodhounds next Friday, February 4th in Washington.

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks have climbed to No. 3 in the class 2A poll, up three spots from last week. They are 16-0 this season, the best start to a year for the program since 1991. Their 16 team wins are the most in class 2A. The Hawks are also receiving two of a possible nine votes to be the No. 1 team in the state. This week, Mid-Prairie has handled West Liberty and Iowa City Regina in a pair of wins by an average margin of 32 points. The Golden Hawks wrap up the week with a long Friday road trip to Bellevue in River Valley Conference action. Ahead of Mid-Prairie in this week’s poll are 12-1 and No. 2 ranked Boyden-Hull from the Siouxland Conference and the new No. 1 in class 2A, fellow River Valley rival Monticello who checks in at 14-0 in the top spot. The Golden Hawks host the Panthers on February 11th.

Two KCII schools are represented in the class 1A poll as receiving votes. Winfield-Mt. Union is listed as the fourth team in the 1A pecking order receiving votes. The Wolves are 15-1 on the year, unbeaten at 12-0 and atop the Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division standings as winners of nine in a row including a 44-31 win against Mediapolis Tuesday. The Wolves travel to Wapello Friday. The WACO Warriors are the fifth team in the class 1A receiving votes list, right behind their rivals from WMU. The Warriors are 13-3 overall, 9-3 in the Superconference South Division and winners of three straight. They have also given the Wolves their only loss of the year. WACO pounded Van Buren Monday 71-45. The Warriors visit West Burlington Friday.
