It was a good night to be a Demon basketball fan on Friday, as both Washington teams managed a season sweep of Southeast Conference foe Burlington.

The boys’ game was all but an elimination game for the SEC crown and Washington still controls their own destiny after a 59-49 home win. Burlington (10-7, 5-2) was the team that came out fast by building a five point early lead and had an 18-15 advantage after one. Ethan Patterson kept the Demons afloat in the first two quarters with four first half triples including one in the final minute to give the orange and black a 30-27 upper hand at the break. The defense buckled down in the third with an 18-7 quarter and the margin got as high as 16 en route to the win. Amarion Davis hung 30 points on Washington in the first meeting, but the senior guard was held to 10 this go around. Patterson finished with a game-high 27 points on six of nine from three. Lucas Kroll recorded 14 points and seven rebounds while Kasen Bailey added 10 points. Patterson tells KCII Sports what got him going last night. “My teammates did a great job of getting me open. The Six brothers were setting hard screens as well as Lucas (Kroll) and Kasen (Bailey) kept finding me. It just happened to be one of those nights where everything was going in. They hurt us rebounding last time we played them, but I thought we kept them off the boards and that helped us defensively. It was just an all around team effort tonight.” Washington improves to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference with the monster game against No. 1 Fort Madison (14-0, 7-0) next on Friday.

The Demon girls continued their momentum from Monday’s win against Ottumwa and they managed their first win streak with a 49-9 beatdown at Burlington (0-16, 0-7). The Grayhounds were without top scorer Alexis Standard and Washington made them pay by jumping all over them in the first half leading 34-4 at the break and it continued to grow in the final two quarters. Lauren Hinrichsen had the hot hand from deep hitting four triples and finishing with a career-high 18 points. Alex Murphy added eight points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Washington improves to 3-13 overall, 2-7 in the league, and they have an area bout hosting Mid-Prairie on Monday in a game that can be heard on KCII.
