The annual Washington County rivalry meeting between the Washington and Mid-Prairie girls’ basketball teams took place last night with history being made in a 47-27 Golden Hawk victory.
In the closing minutes of a 20-point road win, Mid-Prairie senior post player Maddie Nonnenmann made her final bucket of a 15-point night to put her over 1,000 for her career. The four-year player became just the fifth Golden Hawk girl to accomplish such feat and the first since Addie Rath in 2018. The accomplishment was the finishing touches on a Mid-Prairie win that was controlled from the start with the black and gold leading 13-2 after one, 21-11 at the break, and a 38-18 advantage after three to put the game on ice. To go along with her 15 points, Nonnenmann collected eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Amara Jones was also in double figures with 11 and Nora Pennington registered five steals. Washington was led by a seven point effort from Kaylin Long. Mid-Prairie Head Coach Danny Hershberger reflected on Nonnenmann’s historic night. “This is accumulative of all the hard work she has put in over the years. She has put so much time in the gym to accomplish this feat. Not many people can say they scored 1,000 points in their high school career so I am really happy for her.”
The Golden Hawks improve to 13-6 overall and travel to Wilton tonight. The Demons fall to 3-14 and close out Southeast Conference play Friday at Fort Madison.
