winter-driving-2

As Washington County is predicted to see snowfall and freezing temperatures in the next couple of days, residents are reminded to be extra cautious when driving.

District 13 Iowa State Patrol Public Resource Officer Jason Marlow (pronounced mahr-low)says there are many small preparations that can make a big difference in avoiding a wreck or landing in the ditch. Marlow encourages motorists to give a gap of at least three seconds between their vehicle and the one traveling in front of them. An emergency supply kit and extra layers in your vehicle also helps in case of surprises on the road, “I’m a father of a 21-year-old and a couple of teenagers and they think it’s okay to throw on a hoodie as a winter coat. Well that’s all well and good if your heat is working in your car and everything is fine [until] you find yourself stuck out in the elements. So having some extra clothing in the car whether that’s blankets, hats, gloves, boots as well as that vehicle prep. Good tires, windshield washer fluid when it does start to melt a little bit and we have to clear the windshield so we can see.”

Marlow also advises those with a vehicle parked outside should allot enough time in the morning to properly scrape off all of the ice and snow so not to limit your visibility and those of other drivers. He urges drivers to pay attention to signs and points of interest that can help identify your location in case you have to call for roadside assistance. Listen to KCII for weather updates.
