Students, staff and family members in the Lone Tree School District continued their tradition of raising money for organ donation during the 11th Annual Green Out Game Tuesday.

To help everyone ready themselves for the big night, the Lone Tree National Honor Society began selling Green Out t-shirts in December. During the boys and girls varsity basketball games Tuesday night, the school held a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and “chuck a duck” to raise money for the Iowa Donor Network. During halftime at the boys game, Muscatine County resident Alma Brunson spoke on the impact her daughter’s organ donation had on the families of those who received the donations. NHS advisor Jessica Howard explains how this annual event started over a decade ago, “Our community came together about 11 years ago because we had a student who was affected by organ donation, and her life was changed forever. We’ve had a couple of community members as well who have benefited from organ donation. [NHS] took [the event] over about five years ago. And we have been trying to make it bigger and better each single year so that we can really showcase how impactful organ donation is.”

Howard added that this was their most successful year yet with a total of $880 raised. Looking ahead, they hope to up the ante by having a guest speaker at both varsity games, add more of an online presence and possibly have new uniforms for the teams to wear during the games.
