Mid-Prairie standout basketball player Maddie Nonnenmann made her mark on the Golden Hawk record books this week. The Golden Hawk senior had a 15 point night against the rival Washington Demons in a 47-27 win on Monday, crossing the 1,000 career point mark.
Her first career points came on Tuesday, November 20th, 2018, her first career game as a freshman, when she put up 16 in a 69-49 win against Durant. She hit the halfway point on her journey in the final game before Christmas break of her junior season, with eight points on December 22nd, 2020, in a 50-34 win over Northeast Goose Lake.
During her Golden Hawk career she has played in 83 games, starting 60 of them. She missed the final four games of her sophomore year after a broken arm suffered in a game against Washington. In games she has appeared, the Golden Hawks have a 42-41 overall record. She is shooting 44% from the floor as a Golden Hawk with a 30% mark from three point range during her career. Her best shooting season from the floor was her freshman year where she fired 49%, her best three point shooting seasons are her sophomore and junior years where she finished at 32% in each.
Nonnenmann is the fifth Golden Hawk to join the illustrious club, and the first to do so in four years. Other members of the Mid-Prairie girls 1,000 point club include Sarah Larsen, a 2002 graduate, with 1,060 in fourth, Addie Rath, a 2018 graduate, with 1,096 in third, Emily Hershberger Case, a 2007 graduate, second on the list with 1,156, and the program’s all-time leading scorer, Jessica Larsen, a 1997 graduate, with 1,190 points. The 1,000 point club is a family affair for Nonnenmann, Jessica and Sarah Larsen are both her aunts. Nonnenmann spoke with KCII sports this week about how it felt to hit the milestone, the favorite games of her career and basketball in her family. “It felt amazing to hit 1,000 points. It wasn’t just me, it was the whole team that got me to that point. It didn’t just feel like a win for me, it felt like a win for everyone. It means a lot because half of the girls (with 1,000 points) are my aunts. I just wanted to chase after their records and represent the family you know, three out of five! My sophomore year against Washington, it was a pretty tight game and I had 27 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter. I tried to take a charge and broke my arm. Tried to play through it, didn’t quite work. I also remember my freshman year, beating Mount Vernon to go to the second round and also this year beating West Liberty, that was a huge win for us. I won’t forget that game either.”
The Golden Hawks will next be in action when they start the 3A regional tournament Saturday hosting the Tipton Tigers. Nonnenmann comes into the contest with 1,026 points.
