The Highland boys and girls basketball teams were both winners this weekend in the Southeast Iowa Superconference Shootout. Friday night the Highland girls held on to beat Holy Trinity 46-44. The Crusaders led 10-8 after one but Highland put together a 13-4 run that lasted the entire second period to take a 21-14 lead into half. The Huskies’ lead would stand at 10, 35-25 going to the fourth. Holy Trinity roared back late to pull within one possession but the Huskies were able to finish off the victory. Abbi Stransky went double double for Highland with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Dani Laughlin got to double figures with 10. The victory is the 300th in coach Jody Fink’s career. The Huskies are now 11-10 on the year and are next on the floor Thursday when they host the Lisbon Lions to open the 1A regional tournament.
The Highland boys were also a Superconference Shootout winner, taking down Van Buren on the road Saturday 57-45. The Huskies led 18-13 after one and 28-25 at half. Highland won the second half 29-20 including closing the game on a 16-9 run to put things away. Trevor McFarland had a monster double double 20 points and 16 rebounds. Chase Schultz had 12 points, and Kaige Vonnahme 11. Highland is now 4-16 overall. They travel to Keota tonight to meet the Eagles in a non-conference tilt.
