Washington-area residents can get snacks for the big game or a gift for their valentine while supporting a local non-profit this week.

PAWS & More Animal Shelter is hosting an inaugural Sweets & Treats online auction fundraiser now through this Thursday. PAWS & More Board Treasurer Sara ODonnell shares how the community has stepped up to provide over 70 bid items, “So we reached out to the PAWS & More Board and to employees and then just to a handful of friends and family. It really surprises me how many people stepped forward and want to bring multiple items. And we had considered opening it up to the public but I feel that we have enough for our first go at it and we might have been overwhelmed if we had done that.”

The public can place their bids on baked desserts, chocolate-covered strawberries, dips, party mix and more through PAWS & More’s Facebook page, and winning bids must pick up their items from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Kalona Community Center. ODonnell says they wanted to find a suitable location to accommodate their larger area of supporters, and the community center space was graciously donated. The shelter will also be celebrating Valentine’s Day with an adoption-fee waived weekend for their cats and kittens.
