WACO, Highland, Lone Tree Compete at EV Sectional

A handful of KCII area grapplers cracked the top two at Saturday’s class 1A sectional in North English with WACO, Highland, and Lone Tree competing. 

Three Warriors were able to get by the first postseason competition with first place finishes. Gage Samo stood on top of the podium at 106 lbs with an 11-1 major and 1-0 decision victory, Louden Huisenga did the same at 145 lbs with a fall in 2:00 and a 9-3 decision, and Jonah Clark did his thing at 220 lbs with a pin in his only match in just 1:25. Individuals that saw their season end, but had podium finishes included John McLaughlin third at 113 lbs, Larz Smith third at 132 lbs, and Cainan Lovan third at 170 lbs. 

Highland had a pair of grapplers get through with Easton Schlabaugh and Carlos Valenzuela. Schlabaugh made quick work at 113 lbs with a pin in 13 seconds and 2:49 while Valenzuela placed second with a 16-0 tech fall win, 11-8 decision loss, and a 5-2 victory in the wrestle back to move on. Third place performances included Remington Fields at 120 lbs and Jack Peiffer at 126 lbs. 

Lone Tree’s Clemens Swaink was fifth at 120 lbs and Brody Magruder sixth at 160 lbs. Lisbon won the team sectional title with 252 points, WACO was third with 153.5, Highland fifth with 105, and Lone Tree eighth with 14. 

The five that advanced will hit the mat in Wapello on Saturday for districts. Full results can be found below.
