The final of three games in a four day stretch was last night for the Washington basketball teams and they ran into a buzzsaw against a streaking opponent in Williamsburg and the home Raiders won both contests.
As heard on KCII, the girls game was a defensive battle early on with the Raiders having a slight 9-6 advantage after one. Williamsburg was able to turn the Demons over out of the press that led to easy buckets and they started to catch fire from deep. They hit 11 threes in total including four a piece from Carly Rich and Taylor Winegarden. The Raiders (12-8) led 28-11 at the break, 44-16 after three, and cruised to their third straight win by a 54-26 final. Washington was led by a seven point outing from Kaylin Long while Makenna Conrad and Alex Murphy recorded six points. The Demons close the regular season 3-17 and these two squads meet up again in the same spot on Saturday for the first round of the class 3A regionals.
The scorching nets continued into the boys game for the No. 6 ranked in class 2A Raiders, as they buried 14 long balls and beat the No.3 ranked in class 3A Demons by a 83-73 count. Both teams traded runs early with Washington leading 19-18 after one. Kasen Bailey got into foul trouble in the second quarter with the Raiders taking advantage leading 42-37 at intermission. Madox Doehrmann took over in the second half with five of his six triples to keep the Demons at arm’s length and the free throw game down the stretch allowed Williamsburg to pull off the top ten win. Ethan Patterson had a hot shooting night for the orange and black sinking eight threes to finish with a game-high 26 points. Bailey fouled out early in the fourth to finish with 14 points and Lance Sobaski tallied 12. This was Williamsburg’s ninth straight victory. The Demons fall to 16-3 overall and they try to clinch the outright SEC title on Friday hosting Keokuk.
