It was a couple of highly anticipated Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout games for the Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams over the weekend with the Wolves dropping a pair of contests to cross division foes.
It was a battle of one seeds in New London on Saturday with the Tiger boys (17-1) reigning supreme over the conference with a 54-40 victory against the Wolves. It was a rough start for WMU with the Tigers jumping out to a 20-6 lead after one. The road squad cut it to six by intermission, but a 13-4 Tiger third gave them a double digit lead they never relinquished. The Wolves shot just one of 15 from long range. Cam Buffington recorded 19 points and nine rebounds while Abram Edwards registered 11 points and 11 boards. The north division champs drop to 18-2 overall and they close out the regular season today hosting Hillcrest Academy.
The WMU girls traveled to Mediapolis on Friday to battle West Burlington in the second seed game and the Falcons (15-5) squeaked out a 43-41 win. The game was nip and tuck the entire way with West Burlington leading 21-20 at half, the Wolves had a 34-32 advantage after three, but an 11-7 Falcon close was enough to emerge victorious. Bradie Buffington led the Wolves with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Jobey Malone added 10 points.
WMU closes the regular campaign 17-4 and they host Hillcrest on Thursday in the first round of regionals.
