There are a couple opportunities yet this week to indulge your sweeter side ahead of Valentine’s Day and support a local non-profit.

PAWS & More Animal Shelter is hosting their inaugural Sweets & Treats online auction fundraiser lasting now through Thursday on their Facebook page. Over 60 sweet and savory homemade treats are available for bid, and winning bidders must pick up their items from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Kalona Community Center. If you bring a treat in return for the cats and kittens at the shelter, Director Amber Talbot says they are offering fee-waived adoptions this weekend to help the felines find their forever homes, “We just want to make sure that we get these kitties into loving, warm homes before spring hits when we are full again with kitten season. So we’re always trying to be proactive and reducing barriers and helping people adopt in any way that we can is one way that we’ve found seems to be very successful is that when we can reduce or waive adoption fees those people they can still provide a loving home and take care of those animals but it just makes it a lot easier and accessible for people.”

The shelter will be open from noon-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for free cat adoptions that include spay/neuter, deworming, flea and tick preventative, microchip, and more. These adoptions are usually priced at $100, and you can find a link to apply here.
