In hopes of advancing to next week’s state dual tournament, the Sigourney-Keota wrestling team saw those dreams fall short last night when they lost to Alburnett 42-30 in a class 1A regional dual in Wilton.
The semifinal bout could not have started better for the black and gold, as they built a 24-0 advantage on three pins and a forfeit. Aidan Schuster won in 1:12 at 182 lbs, it took Cade Streigle just 41 seconds at 195 lbs, and Conner Reed picked up the fall in 47 seconds at 285 lbs. The Pirates would not be phased and they rattled off nine straight victories including five pins to take control 42-24. Jack Clarahan finished the night with a pin at 170 lbs in 5:17, but the team score was already decided. The Savages won four of 13 contested matches on the evening.
Wilton edged Alburnett 39-34 in the finals to punch their ticket to state. While the S-K dual season comes to a close at 23-1, nine Savage grapplers will compete at Saturdays district meet in Wapello.
