Congresswoman for Iowa’s 2nd District Mariannette Miller-Meeks addressed recent language used by the Republican National Committee to describe the deadly January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The Republican National Committee voted last week to censure Republicans, Representatives Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.)for their work investigating the insurrection, describing the event as “legitimate political discourse.” Since then some Republican Congress members have criticized the RNC’s decision, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) who said Tuesday that January 6th was a “violent insurrection for the purpose of trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power after a legitimately certified election, from one administration to the next.” Republican Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks tells KCII whether she agrees with the RNC’s statement, “Well I think when it comes to January 6th, I’ve been very clear in my statement that I support people’s right to protest. But I don’t support mob violence or violence or riots that turn into violence.”
Senator Charles Grassley (R) told KCII earlier this week he hadn’t read about the RNC’s statement, though he “supposed he ought to.” You can hear more from Miller-Meeks during today’s JJ Nichting Company In Touch with Southeast Iowa program.
