The big day is here for area grapplers. It’s their chance to earn a spot at the State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines during district competition.

All class 2A schools from the KCII listening area will compete at the Williamsburg district meet. The Washington Demons are sending three to districts after their performance last week at Solon. Colley Billingsly won the sectional title for the Demons at 220lbs with No. 5 Aaron Boone at 113lbs and 160lber Chase Greiner advancing as runners-up. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks have three competing this weekend at Williamsburg. At the Benton sectional last week Golden Hawk seniors No. 3 Cael Garvey at 195lbs and Gannon Callahan at 285lbs both won titles and Kaden Meader advanced at 170lbs as a runner-up. Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union has three wrestlers vying for state bids today at Williamsburg. No. 3 Lane Scorpil won the 120lbs sectional title at Benton last week while Kai Malone at 220lbs and Russell Coil at 285lbs got through as runners-up. Joining those three squads in Williamsburg will be Benton, Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Vernon, Burlington Notre Dame, Solon, West Liberty and the home Raiders.

All class 1A schools from the KCII listening area will compete at the Wapello district meet. Sigourney-Keota was dominant at their home sectional a week ago, winning the sectional team championship and sending nine to districts. Sectional champions included No. 12 Cade Molyneux at 160lbs, No. 8 Jack Clarahan at 170lbs, and No. 10 Conner Reed at 220lbs. No. 6 Reanah Utterback, Austin Gorsch, Brady Clark, DJ Hammes, Evan Dawson, and No. 12 Aidan Schuster all got through as runners-up. Three WACO Warriors will be on the mat today in Wapello after qualifying at last week’s sectional at English Valleys. Gage Samo at 106lbs, No. 12 Louden Huisenga at 145lbs and No. 4 Jonah Clark at 220lbs all won titles last week. Highland has a pair of wrestlers in action today with No. 6 Easton Schlabaugh advancing as a sectional champion at English Valleys a week ago at 113lbs and Carlos Valenzuela finishing runner-up. Joining those three teams in Wapello will be Cardinal, English Valleys, Lisbon, Louisa-Muscatine, Mediapolis, Moravia, New London, North Mahaska, Pekin, Iowa City Regina, Van Buren and the home Indians.

Each weight class at each meet features four man brackets with the top two advancing to state in Des Moines. Action starts today at 11a.m. and continues into the afternoon at Williamsburg and Wapello High Schools.
