It’ll be another February where there is no shortage of Southeast Iowa representation at the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament with numerous area athletes punching their ticket to the big dance by cracking the top two at Saturday’s class 1A district meet in Wapello.

Sigourney-Keota had nine competing on the day and three were able to crack the top two including Reanah Utterback making history once again. Having already won the girls state wrestling title last month, the freshman will have a chance to compete for a boys title as well after placing first at 106 lbs. She collected a 3-0 decision and 4-2 sudden victory to become just the fifth girl in Iowa High School history to advance to boys state. She will be joined by teammates Cade Molyneux and Conner Reed. Molyneux managed a fall in 4:34 and an 8-6 sudden victory in the finals to win the 160 lb weight class. Reed won by a 6-2 decision in his first match at 220 lbs and even though he was pinned in the finals, the senior did not need a wrestle back to claim second. Savages that saw their season come to a close included Austin Gorsh fourth at 113 lbs, Brady Clark fourth at 120 lbs, DJ Hammes fourth at 132 lbs, Evan Dawson fourth at 152 lbs, Jack Clarahan third at 170 lbs, and Aidan Schuster fourth at 182 lbs.

WACO was able to get two through with Louden Huisenga winning the 145 lb bracket and Jonah Clark doing the same at 220 lbs. Huisenga managed a pin in 57 seconds and a 4-1 decision to claim gold. Clark made quick work by creating two falls that totaled just 3:00. Gage Samo ended up in fourth at 106 lbs.

Highland came into the day with a pair of wrestlers and both moved onto state with Easton Schlabaugh placing first at 113 lbs and Carlos Valenzuela second at 132 lbs. Schlabaugh was efficient with a 16-0 technical fall and a pin in 1:50. Valenzuela won by fall in 1:14, was pinned in the finals, but did not need a wrestle back to move on.

SK finished fourth in the team standings out of 14 with 55 points, WACO was fifth with 38, and Highland was sixth with 33.5. The seven advancing through will compete at Wells Fargo Arena this Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines. Listen to KCII every hour on the hour all three days for updates on area athletes.
