A fantastic start and holding on for dear life was a recipe for a postseason victory on Tuesday for the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team when they upended Holy Trinity 55-48 in a class 1A region 6 quarterfinal.
The Wolves could not have executed a better first quarter, as they raced out to a 23-7 advantage after eight minutes on the strength of a 23-2 run. The Crusaders got the long ball working to cut it to 33-27 by intermission and they seized all the momentum by cutting it to two by the end of three. The Wolves defense cranked it up when they had to with a 12-7 fourth quarter to hang on for the win. Bradie Buffington was a workhorse inside with a game-high 20 points and Keely Malone hit some critical shots to finish with 18.
WMU improves to 19-4 and they set up a regional semifinal rematch at Burlington Notre Dame on Friday. The No. 7 Nikes (21-0) spoiled the Wolves perfect season last winter in the same round and they advanced last night with a 67-28 victory over WACO.
